Unlimited Reasons To Choose Transylvania For Your Next Yoga & Hiking Retreat
Hiking in Romania can easily transform into an unforgettable experience. Curious to know the reason I keep telling this to everybody?
Well, first of all, Transylvania is a rare encounter with nature and wilderness, pretty far away from crowded cities, unlimited thoughts and daily worries.
The Carpathians, are a range of mountains that form an arc throughout Central and Eastern Europe. Approximately 1,500 km (932 mi) long, it is the third-longest European mountain range, following the Urals with 2,500 km (1,553 mi) and of course, the well know Scandinavian Mountains with 1,700 km (1,056 mi). The Carpathians Mountains occupy almost one-third of Romania, offering many incredible hiking trails. The awesome news for hiking addicts is that if they decide to give Romania a try, from almost anywhere in Romania, they’ll not more than 2-3 hours away from the mountains.
The Carpathians is home to amazing challenging paths, vast swaths of ancient forests, sweeping meadows that go hand in hand with hundreds of plant and wildlife species. Considering that one third of Carpathians Mountains are in Romania, you expect to find here the most scenic mountain landscapes, and that is 100% true. Even though these mountains are found in Romania, the Carpathians stretch for more than 900 Km across the historic region of Transylvania.
Transylvania is known worldwide as the land of vampires, and it is offering a lot more than just daunting myths about queens, emperors or even bloodsucking beasts. You can explore its unchanged medieval villages that are scattered across the region, guarded by the impressive peaks of the Carpathians. Just as any other historical region, Transylvania also hosts over 100 castles and fortresses, including the famous Bran Castle (or Dracula's Castle) and the stunning Peles Castle.
If you are looking however for a memorable stay, where you can combine relaxation or yoga with hiking, you are in the right place. In Pestera, you can find all of these aspects, if you want to experience Transylvania beyond the main sights and the Dracula myths. The hiking trails are still amazing and besides your yoga leggings, you're going to need a sturdy pair of hiking boots, good binoculars and a can of bear pepper spray.
Why a Yoga and a Hiking Retreat?
We all know that the hiking trend started when celebrities such as Jessica Biel or Amanda Seyfried started to incorporate hiking into their lives. Moreover, studies have shown that hiking has similar mental health benefits to yoga and meditation. Can you imagine how it feels to have both of these in just one day?
While it is true that yoga studios started to offer countless ways of immersing yourself into the yoga practice, they won't give you mountains, bird watching, waterfalls and refreshing clean air. For those, I've found just the spot: Hiking the “OM” Peak and Yoga Retreat
Going on an 6-day wellness retreat can have a dramatic impact upon your views on vacationing. Getting tanned and lying on the beach are lovely, but somehow they cannot take you out of your everyday life. Matching the intensity of hiking with the meditative effects of mindfulness can guarantee one of the best getaways ever.
Stepping out, just a short drive from the yoga venue in Pestera to the top of the village, you’ll see mountains all around you waiting to be explored. You can actually see them while chilling on the yoga deck or from your bed anyways but the scenery is better when in the actual nature. As the snowy slopes of the Carphatian Mountains turn into blooming mountain trails, this becomes a hiking haven in the summer.
The Yoga Part
There is a reason why we call it a Hiking and a Yoga Retreat. Each morning begins with a 90-minute Vinyasa or Pranayama yoga class and it ends with a Yin or Restorative class in the evening.
In between yoga, you can take other hikes in the surrounding trails, or just simple walks in the village.
There’s something for all guests, but none of the activities are mandatory. The concept itself is to do whatever we want to do, when we want to do it. The intensity of the hikes is suited for all fitness levels and during each trip you’ll encounter breathtaking waterfalls, horses, local animals and unique views.
And as if that was not enough, you can choose from a variety of additional activities including horseriding, yoga workshops, reading or even organize an extra workshop.
Most days are quite busy with activities, but there’s still time for an ayurvedic massage and to relax in the hammock or stretch in the outdoor hot tub or sauna to steam away aches and pains of the long walks.
